See about tickets below.
- Airport to Copenhagen Center
- Direct trains every 10 or 20 min's; trip takes 13 min's.
NB: Copenhagen in Danish is København.
(Taxi some 200 DKK)
- Copenhagen Center (Central Station) to Roskilde University
- Your destination is the station Trekroner
which is one stop before Roskilde; direct train takes 24 min's.
From Trekroner station, follow the crowds to the university
(direction North of the tracks),
and check the signs for CONTEXT. Walking distance 10-15 min's;
due to construction work, you need to follow a temporary
footpath which may not be perfectly comfortable.
To be sure to find the right train, be aware that not all trains
stop at Trekroner, and only the monitors by the tracks tell
intermediate stations - the big screens in the Central Station
Hall shows only final destination.

gives the best combination of public transportation
from one place to another and with detailed maps, etc.
Maps and routes for those who travel by car:
Krak
provides excellent service.
In general, Denmark and the Copenhagen-Roskilde area has very good an
efficient public transportation (well, supposed to be,
hmmm, these
days they are making various absurd changes
to the schedules without telling; don't tell them I told you);
we will do our best to have updated information up to the conference.
There is a common ticket system for all busses, trains, and metros based on zones
(however, for longer trips to the other end of the country, you need to buy
separate tickets at the stations).
You can buy single tickets at most stations and when you enter busses,
but it's better to be equipped with special punch cards
(Danish: Klippekort) which exists in different colours corresponding
to numbers of zones: At stations and bus stops you find a map which,
with colour codes, explains how many zones you need, then you punch one
or a combination of cards one ore more times to collect the number of
zones you need, and then you can travel within a certain time interval
within those zones. Confused? Most people are happy to help and explain,
so just ask.
A combination of 2 zone (blue) and 3 zone cards (yellow) is fine
to get all combinations since 1) a two zone payment is the minimum needed
even when you travel within a single zone, and 2) 7=∞, i.e.,
paying for 7 zones gives you the right to travel in any no. of zones.
Be warned that prices are fairly high.
If you stay in Cohenhagen and go with the train to Roskilde University
all 5 days of the conference, and go around a bit more, you can
easily spend more that 500 DKK.
Your may consider, as an alternative, to buy a
"7 day Flex card" for all zones (540 DKK), and then do so
as the first thing when you arrive at the airport so you can
start using it for you trip from the airport to Copenhagen Center or Roskilde.
PS: The price for travelling without a ticket is very high,
and most likely no discount for tourists :(
PPS: Driving and especially parking in Copenhagen may be tricky.
Roskilde is a city with a long history and the close distance
to Copenhagen cannot destroy its particular identity and atmosphere.
Must-see's are
Roskilde Cathedral
and the
Viking Ship Museum.
Check Roskilde Tourist Office.
There are are many fine restaurants and bars along Roskilde's main
pedestrian street and nearby lanes.
The Org. Chairs favourite is
Restaurant Mumm;
reservation is recommended and prices, well, not cheap but very reasonable
for the quality.
Weather is unpredictable in Denmark (and has always been so), so you may
want to check
the weather forecast
from Danish Meteorological Institute before you pack your suitcase.
See VISITCOPENHAGEN.COM
for a fairly complete website (which may require a bit of patience;
don't show it to your HCI colleague).
Everyone thinks of Tivoli,
but why not try Bakken
which is far the oldest of the two, in fact the world's oldest
amusement park according to themselves,
is more fun (some say, I didn't ;-), has free entry to the area and,
not least, situated in the wonderful landscape of Dyrehaven;
take S-train or Kystbanen train from Copenhagen to Klampenborg.
Museums in the Copenhagen area and around that you must see:
-
Danish National Gallery:
Very interesting collections from different periods.
Old
dutch well represented.
Small
but very interesting section with
Matisse, Braque, etc. including a nice little Modigliani.
...
for foreign visitors, the section
on Danish "Golden Age" may be the most interesting.
-
The Hirschsprung Collection.
Small museum not so far from the above.
If you only have
time for one museum, this is the one to choose.
Some of the best Danish paintings.
Go for Vilhelm Hammershøi if you are in a sombre mood,
but do not miss Anna Ancher's pictures with sunlight through windows
(essence of light!) - and
other of the so-called Skagen painters.
Danish post-impressionist/colorist Theodor Philipsen (you can easily
find his paintings, he's very fond of backlighted cows)
-
Thorvaldsen's Museum. Museum for famous Danish sculpturer
Bertel Thorvaldsen. If you have the chance, admire
some of his best works in the
Copenhagen Cathedral.
-
Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek.
Impressive collection of French painters plus ancient Roman, Egypt, etc.
-
Ordrupgaard.
Impressive collection of
French painters; special exhibition of Mondrian from August 23.
-
Louisiana. A must for lovers of modern art
in a wonderful setting.
Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg, Warhol, etc.;
13 pieces by Giacometti, best Danish 20th century.
-
Arken. More modern art, installations,
video art (Org. Chairs favourite;
sorry, Danish text only), in an architecturally very interesting building.
